Note from Fr. Edwin:

The marvelous growth of the Christian Church from the first Pentecost day was nothing less than a miracle of reciprocal love.  The infinite love of God, seen in the incarnation, life, death and resurrection of his own divine Son, together with the visible presence of the Holy Spirit sent by the Father and the Son, moved the hearts of those who witnessed these marvels and those who heard of them from witnesses, to give their all in order to become sharers in this divine banquet of love.

Christianity, however, had what no other religion  ever had or could have, it was based on the infinite love of God for man, a love manifested through the Son of God becoming man, so that men could become children of God.  As St. Paul puts it: “God loved us with so much love that he was generous with his mercy… he brought us life with Christ… and raised us up with him and gave us a place with him in heaven” (Eph. 2:4-6).  St. John says: “Think of the love that the Father has lavished on us by letting us be called God’s children, and that is what we are” (1 Jn. 3:1). It was this infinite love of God for us manifested in the incarnation that attracted followers to Christ.  It was the desire of all generous hearts to make some return to God for all he had done and continued to do for them, that prompted the first Christians to abandon kith and kin where necessary, and their own human inclinations, and dedicated themselves to the following of Christ.  It was the same spirit of generosity, aroused by the evidence of God’s love, that made the thousands of martyrs go singing joyfully to their execution and made millions of saints live a life of self-mortification and penance, in order to say thanks in the best way they could.
